A Mentors Prayer

by Ps Bill Wilson

"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ" – Ephesians 4:11-12

A teacher, mentor or coach is essential to influence others. Samuel has an Eli, Joshua had a Moses, and Elisha had Elijah. Jesus chose twelve to be His disciples.

This mentoring process is dependent upon two key factors, the readiness and openness of the student and the experience and knowledge of the teacher. Before you become the teacher you must be first be the student.

"And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha" - 2 Kings 6:17

Elisha realised that the young man was looking at the battle before him instead of the God above him. The direction you position yourself in will determine your success. Elisha prayed that God would open his eyes, he didn’t preach at him – he prayed for the young man. When his eyes were open he saw ‘Chariots of Fire’

God will open your eyes to things that you have never imagined!

It’s important that a mentor leads by example; Elisha exhibited the character of a spiritual man. He opened his eyes and God allowed him to see something that would teach him to never trust his senses but to trust the Spirit. The spiritual man asks God to give him strength to go through the battle rather than delivering him from the battle.

What are you today, the teacher or the student?

What do you want to be?

Last Thought: "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." Romans 8:13-14
